The popular way to account for our problems and failures in life is to blame someone else or something beyond our control. But Jesus said that "inside" each of us are the things that destroy us. The natural man is a garbage can full of wickedness, immorality, murders, deceit, greediness, selfishness. Circumstances, disabilities, natural enemies—these are not our chief problems. Our problem is ourselves. In order to have victory over this "number one enemy," there should be frequent self-evaluation in light of Scripture. First, we need a brand new self. The world's solution for handling problems is either to express or suppress our worst natures. But we cannot gain control over self without a new nature, promised to us by God, accepted by grace through faith. Second, we need God's controlling program for our new natures, a new power to cease our struggle with self and failure. "Christ in you, the hope of glory" (Col. 1:27) promises to help build a spiritual, protective wall against our number one enemy: Self.
