Author: Rice, John R.
The Pharisees were strong on formalism and very strict. The Apostle Paul said that he himself had been, according to the straitest sect, a Pharisee (Acts 26:5). Paul was strong on tithing. The Pharisees even brought mint, anise and cummin--a tithe of little garden spices--and observed every detail of washing of pots and cups and hands; yet they neglected the weightier matters of the law. Eight times in Matthew chapter twenty-three the Lord called them hypocrites, saying they appeared outwardly righteous to men, but within were full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Formalism is a very serious sin. Strangely enough, there is less plain teaching on formalism than on nearly any other sin though it is one of the most prevalent sins. Read as Dr. Rice explains this unscriptural teaching present in many churches today.
