The Revolutionary War ended and a new nation was born, but the struggle for religious freedom was far from being over. John Leland, a Baptist minister in the Virginia colony, was arrested and jailed because he did not belong to the established church. He led a group of independent religious patriots with concerns that the new proposed Constitution did not include guarantees for religious freedom. "The Revolution has been fought and won," he said. "But if religious liberty is not secured, then for us it will largely have been in vain."
